It sounds like the headline should be “Criminal Cops kill suspect”
A prisoner killed in a Maryland county jail on Sunday was a victim of “vigilante justice,” Prince George’s County’s Chief Executive Jack Johnson said.Ronnie White, 19, died of strangulation and asphyxiation and had two broken bones in his neck, an autopsy showed.
An attorney for White’s family said because White was being held in solitary confinement at the Prince George’s County Correctional Center, a corrections officer would have had to let whoever killed the prisoner into his cell.
His death came two days after his arrest in connection with the death of Prince George’s County police Cpl. Richard Findley, who died Friday after being struck by a truck. Authorities believe White was driving the truck, which was thought to be stolen. Police were attempting to flag it down when Findley was struck.
“The killing of the officer is absolutely abhorrent, but also, Mr. White was presumed innocent and deserved his day in court just like any other citizens,” Johnson said Monday night. “We live in a constitutional democracy, and no one has the right to be judge and jury.”
The FBI’s Baltimore field office said it has opened a civil rights investigation into White’s death. The Justice Department also said it is monitoring the case, although it was not involved as of Tuesday.
Johnson on Monday said he had requested that the Maryland State Police conduct an independent investigation into White’s death.
White family attorney Bobby Henry said there are only two ways someone could get into solitary confinement. Video Watch why death has outraged family »
Don’t Miss* WBAL: Prisoner’s death ruled a homicide
“You either have to be buzzed in from the booth — I believe it’s called the control booth — you need a key from there, or you have to get a key from one of two officers who were assigned to his unit on that day,” Henry said.
I don’t like this guy just from his ugly puss ,however
he was in fact lynched in his own cell, must have been
the dead cops friends or family.Wonder why we do not
hear of any video cameras around in that jail?.
one less car-stealin’ scumbag roaming the streets.
sounds like someone just saved the county a TON in court costs.
of course, his worthless family will likely sue (since the guy was such a pillar to the community and his family — NOT)… as if his life was worth more than a $1.95 to begin with….
Overlord:
Examples abound that the “authorities” are far from being infallible, and even if they were this man was still due his day in court. Let’s not forget that a person is supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, under the current system. Also, remember that there are plenty of people higher up the food chain that would say the same of you…therefore, do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
“You shall do no injustice in court. You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor.” Leviticus 19:5
While it is a shame that the boy was killed, everyone seems to be overlooking the fact that an officer was killed as well. Even in the words of the family lawyer, the officer has never been referred to by name.
How about some coverage about the officer who left behind a family instead of just this lowlife that got what he deserved.
Eye4anEye:
I’m not sure how you arrived at the conclusion that this guy got what he deserved, since he never got his day in court.
I certainly haven’t overlooked the death of a police officer, but danger and potential loss of life are part and parcel to the job he chose. The article under discussion wasn’t about his demise, but rather was about the “vigilante justice” applied to the individual who was a *suspect.*
Where is the national Headline “Cop Dragged 60 Feet Before Death.” This animal got what was coming to him good riddance to bad rubbish.
Instantly blame the cops for wrong doing. Maybe the guy tripped and hit his throat on his metal bed frame or something in his cell that caused him crush his larynx. But lets face it!! He is a [edited] turd of society, and got what he deserved. This man ran over another human being while driving a stolen vehicle, and was probably drunk or on crack. He probably has a rap sheet a mile long. However it happened, but was probably devine intervention the tax payers were spared paying millions in court costs and keeping this turd alive for 40 more years.
And to his family. You should be outraged that your son, or brother ran over a police officer while driving a stolen car. Mom was probably high on crack and failed to properly educate and care for her children.
Of course Race will also play a huge role in the investigation and lawsuit.
Best thing ever happened and that was to get ready of this scum bag this way.
Too bad now his family is going to be rich and famous and the family of the police officer never will be mentioned. Something is wrong with this picture.
The scum bag kills a police officer and because he is black the press make’s a big deal and totally ignores or avoids making it clear that this guy killed the officer by driving over him with an stolen vehicle. Who in their right mind can fill sorry about such an individual?
You last three commenters all seem to be unable to grasp the overall significance of the event., and instead are mired down in the details of the case, as you perceive them to be.
Okay, the kid may or may not have intentionally run over the cop, either way he deserved to have an opportunity to defend his actions and to be judged by a group of his peers. If the police department or the deceased officer’s family participated in an act of revenge against this person, then they are no better then the young man so many have presumed guilty. What is at stake here is our civil rights. We have a right to defend ourselves when we are accused. If you allow people to take that away, we become a barbaric society that will spiral out of control with murder, theft, and corruption. The police department should not have had custody of him when they are so obviously hurting at the loss of their comrade. Another county should have jailed him for his safety and that of the involved officers.
