A man distraught because he could not find work shot and killed his mother-in-law, his wife and three sons and then killed himself inside a home in an upscale San Fernando Valley neighborhood, police said.
Authorities said the man had an MBA in finance but appeared to have been unemployed for several months and had worked for major accounting firms, such as Price Waterhouse.
The two-story rented home is in a gated community in Porter Ranch, about 20 miles northwest of Los Angeles.
The shootings were discovered after 8:20 a.m. Monday, after a neighbor called police to report that the wife had failed to pick her up to take her to her job at a pharmacy, Deputy Chief of Police Michel Moore said.
Ed Winter, assistant chief from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office, identified the suspect as Karthik Rajaram, 45.
Winter said the victims included Rajaram’s mother-in-law, Indra Ramasesham, 69, and his 19-year-old son Krishna Rajaram, a Fulbright Scholar and honor student at UCLA.

It’s too bad this happened. It should have happened to members of our government. Oh wait, they are rich from greed and corruption so what would be the point of suicide….
It’s noone’s fault but the man who shot his family and self. Is life that so unimportant that we lose faith and our sanity that we take life because money isn’t right? Yes, George Bush & the government has caused this economy to cause alot of families to lose jobs and to lose their normal lifestyles but does that mean we just lose our heads and take life? There are other solutions, he could have moved his family to another city, he could have found jobs in other industries. I live in Houston and we are thriving in the energy & oil & gas field. What was he doing for the past 3 months? Was he actively searching or wallowing in his distress? I’m a single mother w/3 kids & it gets hard sometimes but never to the point where I would take my kids lives nor mine. My faith in God is too strong & who knows what the next day may bring? It’s my job as a parent to ensure that my kids & I eat and if it meant that I had to take a part-time job cleaning hotel rooms to make it then that is what I would have to do. Money is the root of all evil.
Guy must be a nut- Big deal - declare bankruptcy and move into a smaller house. I dont see the “honor” in killing your own family - unless it’s a distorted religous view of an afterlife. Even then he would go to hell for murder and they might go elsewhere. Just never understood the family killing part.
Many people live entire rich and wonderfull lives on a third of his income.
Shame.
Money isnt the root of evil, just the want of it - (or chocolate, or drugs, or houses, or shoes, whatever your addiction.)
