People who were standing in line for food had to be turned away at the Burton Senior Center recently because of cuts in a federal commodity food program.
The cutbacks are impacting the less fortunate all over Genesee County. Federal cuts are preventing new applicants from getting any food.
The Burton Senior Center helps about 75 families a month with a box of food items — things like canned food, rice and oatmeal.
Now there’s a freeze on new applicants, and that has some people upset, including people who use the program.
“I don’t think its right,” said Helen Eanes of Flint. “Seniors aren’t getting enough now as it is, and they keep taking away from us.”
“It seems like they’re picking on the people who are poor and letting the big shots get away with everything,” said Beverly Wilkins of Burton.
They’re bailing out the banks and you can’t get a can of soup in Burton. The federal program is operated through the Genesee County Community Action Resource Department or G-CARD.
