And I looked, and behold, a pale horse! And its rider’s name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by wild beasts of the earth. Revelation 6:8

The world will face high food prices “in the years to come,” according to the declaration that the United Nations’ food summit is set to adopt on Thursday.

“The indications are that food prices will remain high in the years to come,” a draft of the declaration seen by the Financial Times says. It adds that the world needs to “increase the resilience of the present food production system.”

The summit – hosted by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation in Rome – is expected to publish the final declaration later on Thursday, but diplomats said that countries were still to agree the full text.

The diplomats added that the summit was already at risk of failure, having missed a deadline to approve the draft declaration. They also recognised that compromise to reach a consensus had watered-down the declaration significantly.

Countries would commit to “eliminating hunger and to securing food for all today and tomorrow.” It adds that “the current crisis has highlighted the fragility of the world’s food system and their vulnerability to shocks.”

But although leaders agreed to make agriculture a political priority, the draft declaration says little about how to resolve differences on the most controversial issues: biofuels and trade.
